PREPPING STUDENT MATERIAL I always like students to use nice materials in my classes, especially when they will be using sawn veneer. Today I cut up a bunch of curly maple for this weekend’s class at the Connecticut Valley School of Woodworking @ct.valley Students will choose either the cracked ice or marquetry ribbon pattern to create a tabletop, but they will learn how to make both. The cracked ice pattern is like a puzzle where you need to figure out the the correct sequence of pieces as you build it. You get to be the creator of the puzzle and the one who solves it! The ribbon pattern is also a puzzle with a sequence, but you will be using the double bevel marquetry method to create it. The work for both patterns is quiet and meditative and engages the mind, with the only sounds being the hum of the scroll saw, a block plane shooting edges and your brain at work (it’s true, you can hear it!) Both patterns take advantage of the chatoyant quality of the wood, where a simple change in grain direction can create dramatic effects. SURFACE EMBELLISHMENTS CLASS Great weekend workshop at the Wendell Castle Workshop @wendellcastleworkshop where students learned techniques to add texture and patterns to furniture. They learned to use the scroll saw to create overlay patterns, used steel stamps and carving tools to add lively patterns and textures to surfaces, created parquet veneer patterns, learned about lumber core and other veneer substances, and discovered the secrets of double bevel marquetry. CRACKED ICE AND RIBBON TABLE CLASS AT CT VALLEY SCHOOL OF WOODWORKING It’s a busy time of year on the workshop front. I have an upcoming class at CVSW @ct.valley on November 9 & 10 in Manchester, CT. Students will learn to create two different patterns, a cracked ice parquet pattern and a ribbon marquetry pattern, and they will choose to focus on one pattern to complete. This class is accessible to people with basic woodworking skills but will also add new skills and design possibilities to more advanced students. Join me for a fun and focused class where you will spend time with the scroll saw and block plane to create these beautiful patterns. Gallery director Brad Wolcott has curated a wonderful exhibit exploring how our personal work evolves over time. Every piece has roots in what came before it. NOT JUST ANY SCHOOL, IT’S THE WENDELL CASTLE SCHOOL! I’m excited to be one of the first round of instructors at this new school in Scottsville, New York. Classes will take place in the actual studio where Wendell created his iconic sculptural pieces. Wendell Castle’s work was an enormous inspiration to many over his 60+ years of making, including me, and it will be an honor to briefly occupy a space where so much creativity happened. I met Wendell several times and saw in person many of his works. Here are just a few. Classes will begin in Spring 2024 and I will be teaching in the Fall.
