RECEPTION ON FRIDAY Join me with the NH Furniture Masters on Friday evening in Concord, NH for an opening reception for our latest exhibit! Gallery director Brad Wolcott has curated a wonderful exhibit exploring how our personal work evolves over time. Every piece has roots in what came before it. This exhibit features works by 5 makers, showing older pieces and new work side by side to highlight this concept. NOT JUST ANY SCHOOL, IT’S THE WENDELL CASTLE SCHOOL! I’m excited to be one of the first round of instructors at this new school in Scottsville, New York. Classes will take place in the actual studio where Wendell created his iconic sculptural pieces. Wendell Castle’s work was an enormous inspiration to many over his 60+ years of making, including me, and it will be an honor to briefly occupy a space where so much creativity happened. I met Wendell several times and saw in person many of his works. Here are just a few. Classes will begin in Spring 2024 and I will be teaching in the Fall. MARQUETRY CLASS I’m excited to teach another class at HatchSpace @hatchspacevt in Brattleboro, VT on December 9-10. Students will learn the classic double bevel technique to create seamless inlays. This class is also a great introduction to veneer work in general as we will cover veneer substrates, adhesives, edge banding and pressing. Creating marquetry designs can seem like a mysterious task, but once you understand the basics, it is easy to create stunning veneer compositions. CRACKED ICE TABLETOP AT HATCHSPACE Excited to be teaching another class at HatchSpace in Brattleboro, Vermont @hatchspacevt Students will create their own pattern using thick, sawn curly maple veneer provided by me, and there will be a lot of work with a sharp block plane as you build this intricate pattern. In addition, this class is a great introduction to veneer work in general as we will cover different types of substrates, adhesives, edge banding, and pressing with a vacuum bag. Proceeds go to support our educational initiatives, including our Prison Outreach Programs where inmates at the NH Correctional Facilities for both men and women, along with the Maine State Prison are taught furniture making skills. The Main Event is this Saturday, October 28 from 5-7:30 at the League of NH Craftsmen Gallery in Concord, NH. The silent auction will feature donated artworks by the Furniture Masters as well as their collaborators at The League. JERE OSGOOD 1936 - 2023 Last week the furniture world lost a giant. Jere died last Monday in New Hampshire after a period of failing health. Jere’s influence through his prodigious body of work and through the many people he taught and mentored, will ripple on for decades. Jere (sounds like Jerry) was a master of curving shapes. “A straight line is a missed opportunity,” according to Jere. He perfected a technique to create tapered and bent laminations that were both graceful and incredibly strong. He used the technique widely in his extraordinary desks, tables, chairs and chests. Jere was a mentor to me and a colleague and I am grateful that I was able to exhibit alongside him with the Furniture Masters and at Pritam and Eames Gallery for many years. Several years ago Ted Blachly organized a sale of Jere’s treasure trove of lumber and veneer. I bought as much as I could afford and wished that I had taken out a loan to buy more. Many colleagues in the region purchased material and at some point we will have an exhibit of works from Jere’s wood collection. PATTERN TOOLS This is all quite primitive, but not!From 1991-2000 I rented space in the former Greenfield Steel Stamp building in Greenfield, MA and I found stamps everywhere! I made patterns with the letters and numbers and then started reshaping the stamps to create my own figures. The stamps are tempered, but if you heat them with a torch until they glow, they lose their temper and can be worked with files and stones. Later, I bought rod stock and created my own.
