New Cabinets
During the Winter and Spring I was inspired to create two new cabinets, "Blonde On Blonde",
below right, and "Key To My Heart", left. They emerged in a concentrated burst of creativity, sharing a precious few boards of Japanese ash, and both were a reminder of how much I enjoy building cabinets. I love the precision and engineering that goes into this kind of work, and the surfaces are like a painter's canvas, ready for me to play out ideas of pattern, color, and texture.
"Key To My Heart" is currently available and is being shown at the Dane Gallery on Nantucket. "Blonde On Blonde" has been part of the New Hampshire Furniture Masters exhibit season, most recently at the Currier Museum Of Art. In November it will travel to SOFA in Chicago to be part of a special exhibit on studio furniture www.sofaexpo.com. I will be represented at SOFA by William Zimmer Gallery from Mendocino, CA. www.williamzimmergallery.com.
Something Different
Moving from "Blonde On Blonde" I went right into a four tall post king-size bed. The client wanted something dramatic in a very dark wood. We discussed the options and in the end decided to do a black-dyed finish on cherry. The results were outstanding. Below is a detail of the headboard with bubinga accents. I call this one "Back In Black".
In The News
I was delighted to be featured in the June/July issue of American Woodworker Magazine. The
article was written by Spike Carlsen who recently published a fascinating book titled A
Splintered History Of Wood. Click on the page below to see the whole article.
What's Next
Time to sharpen the blades and get ready for the next round of projects. I have a cabinet to build for one of my favorite local clients (below). It is still on the drawing board, but should launch soon. There is a desk coming up to go along with one I made last year. And as always, there are ideas brewing for
new pieces of my own. Stay tuned.
