NEWS AND EVENTS: Summer 2008

It is blazing HOT today, around 100 degrees. The coolest place (of course) is my workshop. It has a concrete floor and good shade so it is very comfortable. Tonight's music on the CD player is a live set of the Bill Holman Band. Great version of The Beatles “A Day In The Life”.

Summer is always a busy time, and this year is no exception.

On June 19 I will be part of a panel discussion focused on The College of the Redwoods at the Furniture Society Conference in Purchase, New York. I'm excited to share the stage with three other graduates and try to unravel some of the myths about the school.

I have work on exhibit at three galleries this summer.

Pritam and Eames in East Hampton, NY is showing a pair of my “Stencil Tables”. These are bubinga and Swiss pear (pictured on right). The skirts feature a veneer cut-out pattern, a technique I have been having fun with lately.

Dane Gallery on Nantucket Island, MA has another set of the “Stencil Tables”. This pair is in walnut with yew wood top and patterns. Dane is also showing a hall table in cherry, with carved and stamped patternwork.

Sharada Gallery in Rhinebeck, NY is showing a pair of my “Lotus Tables”. These are pictured in the Portfolio section of my website.

Pictured above is a recent commission. A coffee table in yew wood and wenge. A new design, I did something unusual (for me) by using material that might otherwise have been in the scrap pile. I had a stack of bandsawn yew wood veneer left over from last year that had a knot running through it. Something about it was suggestive. Once I began to play around with the material, the swirling grain around the knots inspired a fun pattern on the elliptical top. Thank you to the patron for letting my imagination take over on this piece.

I am about to begin two new projects. One is a writing desk and chair commission. We've been working through the design and almost have it
nailed down. I'll be working on it this summer.

I am also starting a new cabinet (drawing below). Yippee! I haven't done a new cabinet in over a year. Very excited. Materials: English sycamore, Japanese ash. Working title is “Blonde on Blonde”. Dimensions: about 34” Ht. X 46” wide. It will be in the works over the next few months. Check back for progress on this piece.

That's all for now.
